Okay so there is the Toyota Camry, the Honda Accord or Civic, the Ford Fusion or Focus, the Chevy Malibu are a few safe and reliable cars with good mpg, off the top of my head. Those are new cars that are a good price. You can also go for a small SUV or crossover though those should be bought used normally since a good lower cost SUV is never worth the money new, like maybe a RAV4. It depends on the size you want your vehicle though I would prolly recommend a medium size car like an Accord size. Theres also the Nissan Altima which is my favorite.

All would be good mid-sized vehicles. Not too bad on insurance and decent cars all around.

Any Honda they are great cars and there are a lot of different models to pick from im not sure of your budget but i like the new 2009 Accords. I would stay away from American made cars not very reliable.

Get a used saturn ion. They go cheap and last forever.
