What types of vehicles get auctioned?
Hunter asked:
I'm planning on buying a 01 Honda Civic EX at a local dealership. The car has aftermarket exhaust, rims, and cd-face plate…but the CarFax report showed the vehicle was sold at an auction, which makes me wonder: with a nice car like this, why would someone put it up for auction in the first place??? Other than it being a repossesed vehicle (CarFax gives it the buyback gaurantee by the way–not a junked/salvaged) does anyone know why this car could have been sold at an auction? Thanks!
All very valid points!

All types of cars go at auction. The most common reason is Repo. No worries. Ive gotten some awesome cars at auction, and made lots of money on them too.

It could have been reposessed. That's my first thought.

It was most likely a repo, but there are times when someone gets pulled over, arrested and either isn't getting out soon, or couldn't afford to get it out of the tow yard so they put it up for auction to get some money out of it.

Auctions will bring rental cars, leased cars, and cars which have been on the lot too long, or which the dealer doesn't want to mess with. It doesn't mean it was junk or anything bad, although there are some of those as well.

The large part of vehicles that end up at the auctions are off-lease returns, replaced rental fleets, company cars, repossessed vehicles and trade-ins. It's the easiest way to sell cars, for financial institutions and dealers alike.
Here is a good article on What Kind of Vehicles Are Sold at Dealer Auctions:
It could very well be that the dealer who dumped the tricked out Civic at the auctions specialized strictly in another car make – e.g. they could have been a Benz dealership and took this as a trade-in, but couldn't (or didn't want to) sell it at their dealership. Also you should bear in mind that aftermarket modifications while admired by a small niche market are generally frowned upon by the majority of car buyers (think families and baby-boomers who would consider any mods unsafe). This kind of car could have sat on a dealer's lot a long time before they decided to get rid of it at the auctions. I recommend you negotiate yourself a good price and not worry much about why it was at the auctions. Good luck!
