I need some help on abandoning my car?
Errol N asked:
I have a car, that is now totaled bc of an accident. The loan, I'm still paying on it, the place (credit acceptance) that gave me the loan isnt interested in the car, they WONT repossess the car!!!! I told them that I'm still pyin on it; i even asked them why dont they take off the lien on the title so i can atleast junk the vehicle??? they tell me NO. So, im stuck w/ this car!!! I was thinkin to drop the car off at the corp. office prkin lot, since they wont come get it, but i was told I'll be billed for abandonment, after they run the vin and such, so I'm thinkin.. cant i just scratch the vin numbers off??? and then adandon the vehicle??? the plate is removed and my paper work is also out of the car?
I cant sell the car!!!! the bank wont take OFF the lein on the title!!!!!! they tell me to py off the car, before they release the title!!!! and they wont take the car!!!!!

VIN number is everywhere. Sell it to a scrapyard.

Errol, can I assume you didnt have full coverage insurance at the time of the accident? If, for any reason, you do have full coverage, the insurance company will pay the value of the vehicle. If you have had an accident without coverage, then you have no choice in the matter but to keep the wreck until it is paid in full. Once you get clear title, you can junk it. I have to disagree with the above poster who tells you to junk the vehicle now. You cannot sell or junk a vehicle that you do not have clear title on. And your loan company is correct. If you simply drop the car off at their property, there are several places that the VIN is ( such as under the gas tank) and they will find out it is yours and you are looking at further legal problems. It places you between a rock and a hard place, but without proper insurance ( if that is the case ), you dont have any choice in the matter. Best of luck to you and I hope this helps you somewhat.

Two choices. Store the vehicle until it's paid off at which time you can legally scrap it or stop paying until it's reposessed

Your VIN is not the only ID on it. The doors can be traced to the car and process of elimination will id you within a few hours.
Better bet, and don't laugh, is to sell it on EBay. Some putz will likely buy it for the novelty. Include in the add the buyer must pay for shipping.
Getting a little creatively graphic about the accident that caused it may increase it's selling power.
Doubt me? Check out what is for sale on EBay.. I think the section is called unusual items or some such.
There are a lot of freaks out there and some of them have money.
Good luck.

Sounds like you answered your own question. They won't reposes, and you don't want them to anyway. If they did reposes they would sell the car for $50 worth of scrap, and you would get stuck with the remaining balance plus other charges.
You just need to pay off the loan, then call someone who will take the car for scrap or donate it.
Better yet, go to the car dealer who sold you the thing, and trade it in on another junker. You would be completely upside down on the loan, so you would need good credit and you would have to have insurance.

I would think that if you were making payments on the vehicle, that the bank (or whoever was supplying the money) would require you to have some kind of insurance, so if the car gets totaled before it's payed off, they get their money and the wreck can be disposed of without a hassle.
You could try selling the whole wreck for parts to somebody who has the same kind of car, but they might not want it if there are problems with the title.
You could try getting rid of it at a scrap metal yard, but they might not take it as a car if the title is not clear. You could dismantle and/or cut it up with a torch and mix it with other random scrap steel (like old appliances, farm/garden equipment, steel stud ends, tubing, pipe scraps, etc) and bring the whole mess in one or more loads. The place where I go NEVER asks any questions about how anything was acquired, or if you have the legal right to sell it! If anyone asks anything about it, you could say it's just scavanged from people's trash etc, and you're bringing it in for beer money The heavy parts like the engine block and transmission could be brought in on a separate trip, again preferably along with other similar scrap like old radiators, cast iron pipe etc. Also, you're going to have a lot of plastic, glass, wires, hoses etc to get rid of; just sneek some of it in your regular trash each week.
Note: I'm not certian this is legal, so I can't assume any responsibility if you get in trouble.
