How can the US Military defend against IED attacks in Iraq?
C H asked:
It seems the biggest problem over in Iraq is IEDs (improvised explosive devices) they are hidden everywhere and pose a real problem to US military forces. They are working on new vehicles that are more resistant against IED attacks, but what do you think would be a good defense against IEDs? PLEASE – no anti-war junk! 10 points!

There is no good answer, not unless they can come up with a design for heavy duty blast proof material, that is still functional. The money and time it would take for technology to be found, just is not there.
Foot patrols, are the most dangerous. Even if our forces can find the devices, destroying them becomes a major issue. Think about this, it takes a bomb to get rid of a bomb. How many are recovered intact.? Not all of them are made the same. So it's like opening presents on Christmas; some you guess right and others are a surprise.
There is no easy answer without someone calling foul. No matter what protection we have for our forces there will always be tragedy. Someones child will be lost.
