I live in the Southern US and I see a LOT of these things on the backs of tractor trailers heading to port and then to Iraq. I think these will make a difference. Unfortunately they do not protect against the Explosively Formed Penetrator (EFP's) that many in the intelligence community suspect are being manufactured and imported in to Iraq from Iran. When these EFP's explode they fire a slug of molten copper into the vehicle with disastrous consequences for the vehicle occupants. The MRAP's are not designed to defeat this type of weapon. I would say that the best way to prevent IED's from being planted in the first place would be to make it EXTREMELY uncomfortable for those caught planting them. To prevent the EFP's from being imported then I would suggest that we make life for the Iranians and the Shiite Militias equally EXTREMELY uncomfortable. Training is the best defence against IED/VBIED attacks. Training is being conducted on all levels of the military in order to reduce casualties.
